Enlightened Equipment – Revelation Quilt – 850 down

Do you know that feeling of being so happy with a piece of gear that you want everyone to try it? That is us with the quilts from Enlightened Equipment. Years ago, hunting for the best sleeping bag we could find, we ordered a Revelation from this small company in Minnesota and have not looked at another quilt since.

A quilt is not a sleeping bag. There is no zipper along the full length and no hood, because the insulation under you gets crushed flat and does nothing anyway. Your sleeping pad does that job. What you save is weight and pack size. The Revelation has a short zipper at the foot end with a drawcord, so you can close it into a proper footbox when it is cold, or open the whole thing flat and use it as a blanket when it is not. On a clear evening you wrap it around you like a cape and stay up a bit longer for the stars.

Which temperature rating?

EE rates its quilts at the limit temperature, not the comfort temperature. Add roughly 5 to 6 degrees for the temperature at which most people sleep comfortably. So the 30°F / -1°C model is a quilt for nights down to about 5°C, and usable to -1°C if you sleep warm or add a layer. EE explains it well in their article About our temperature ratings.

• 40°F / 4°C: summer in the lowlands, warm sleepers, bikepacking in July. This model has no draft collar.
• 30°F / -1°C: our all-rounder. Spring, summer and autumn in most of Europe, and the one we grab most often.
• 20°F / -7°C: three-season with margin, cold sleepers, autumn in the mountains.
• 0°F / -18°C: winter and high mountains. Serious loft, still under a kilo.

Why we rate the Revelation

1. Weight. Nothing else at this warmth comes close for the grams.
2. Pack size. It compresses into an absurdly small package. A light compression sack helps, just do not store it compressed at home.
3. Versatility. Footbox closed for cold nights, blanket for warm ones, cape for stargazing.
4. Comfort. The 10D nylon feels like nothing on your skin and the down lofts like a cloud. Come and feel one in the shop if you do not believe us.
5. Made with care. Designed, filled and finished in Winona, Minnesota by people who use this stuff themselves. You can tell.

Sizes

Two measurements: length and width. Regular / Regular fits people up to about 183 cm and is 137 cm wide. Regular / Wide is the same length but 147 cm wide, for side sleepers and people who move a lot. Long / Wide is 213 cm long and 147 cm wide, for anyone up to about 198 cm.

Specifications

• Fill: 850 fill power down, RDS certified. Weight may vary by roughly 3% because down is a natural product.
• Fabric: 10D nylon outer in your chosen colour, 10D charcoal nylon inner, both with a PFC-free DWR finish.
• Footbox: roughly 50 cm zipper with drawcord and snaps, so it closes fully or opens flat.
• Draft collar: on the 0°F, 20°F and 30°F models. Snaps and a drawcord at the neck keep the warm air in.
• Baffles: continuous U-shaped baffles keep the down where you need it. If it ever shifts, you can shake it back.
• Pad attachment: elastic straps with clips on both sides, so the quilt stays put on your sleeping pad.
• Included: silnylon stuff sack, cotton storage bag (store it in this, uncompressed) and two pad straps.
