Light, stable and good looking, the X-Boil FS is one of my favourite alcohol setups for hiking and backpacking. The windshield is rolled from very thin stainless steel and has pot hooks that hold your pot above the flame, so you do not need a separate pot stand. It rolls up flat around your burner and disappears in the bottom of your pack.
Which size do you need?
Choose the version that fits the diameter of your pot or mug.
- 75-85 mm Ultralight: for small mugs like the TOAKS 450 ml titanium cup.
- 90-100 mm Ultralight: for the TOAKS 550, 650 and 750 ml titanium pots.
- 105-115 mm Standard: for wider pots like the TOAKS Light 700 ml.
- 120-130 mm Standard: for large pots like the Evernew 600 ml and 900 ml.
A bigger pot still works, you simply rest it on top of the windshield. The gap between burner and pot gets larger then, so you lose some efficiency. Another option is to push two thin stakes, for example TOAKS titanium stakes, through the holes at the top and build your own pot stand.
The burner in the set
Every set comes with an alcohol burner. It is the well known open can, with a layer of carbon felt inside. That gives you a stable flame and it keeps the alcohol from sloshing out when you move the burner. The burners are also available separately.
