Nitecore – NWE10 – electronic emergency whistle

A normal whistle only works as long as you can put air through it and though we really love our tiny UL 3D printed whistles, these electronic ones are a big step up. If you’re exhausted or lose consciousness, it goes quiet. That’s the gap Nitecore closed with the NWE10: an electronic emergency whistle with its own battery that gives a signal of up to 126 dB at 3,300 Hz on the button, and in SOS mode keeps signalling on its own, even when you no longer can.

Operation is simple. A short press is a single beep, say to get your buddy’s attention further up the trail. Holding the button gives a continuous tone and after about 10 seconds it switches to SOS by itself. That SOS then repeats roughly every 3 minutes, for up to 80 hours on a full charge. Once in SOS, a short press puts it in BEACON mode, a repeating location signal that lets rescuers find you by ear in fog or darkness. Four LEDs above the button show how full the battery is (there’s no light on it, it’s purely a sound device).

For bikepacking and winter trips the temperature range is the interesting bit. The 300 mAh battery is cold-resistant and Nitecore rates it for use down to -40 °C. Charging is via USB-C (cable included) in about 2 hours, and you can hang it off your power bank while it’s signalling. The hard plastic housing is IPX7 waterproof and survives a one metre drop. Just as a reminder: it’s still a device with a battery. Nitecore recommends topping it up every 6 months when not in use.

It weighs 38 grams, 48 grams with the included OUTDOCK bracket. The bracket clips onto MOLLE webbing or a pack shoulder strap, but the whistle itself also has a clip and a lanyard hole. The NWE10 comes in four colours, black, orange, green and white.
