The Enigma APEX is the Enigma’s synthetic twin: the same sewn-closed footbox and zipper-free design, but filled with Climashield APEX instead of down. Without a zipper it is the lightest synthetic quilt Enlightened Equipment makes, and one of the lightest anywhere.
Synthetic insulation makes sense in a wet climate. Down collapses when it gets damp; APEX keeps its loft, dries quickly and goes in the washing machine without fuss. You pay for that with a bit more weight and a larger pack size than the down Enigma, and it compresses less, so give it a slightly bigger stuff sack. For wet-weather bikepacking, canoe trips or anyone who does not want to worry about their quilt, it is a very good choice.
Temperature rating
EE rates its quilts at the limit temperature. Add roughly 5 to 6 degrees for a comfortable night: the 30°F / -1°C model is a quilt for nights down to about 5°C, and usable to -1°C if you sleep warm or add a layer. See About our temperature ratings.
