The Zpacks Plex Solo is the benchmark for ultralight solo tents. It pitches with a single trekking pole or a 52″ tent pole, has one door and one vestibule, and still leaves enough room for one person with their gear alongside (best up to a height of around 1.80 m, a little taller is fine but then you’re more likely to brush the walls and pick up condensation). If you’re taller, go for the roomier Altaplex.
The Olive Drab Lite version uses 0.55 oz/sqyd DCF (and 0.75 DCF for the floor) for an absurdly low weight of just 332 grams. The Spruce Green Standard version uses 0.75 oz/sqyd (and a 1.0 oz floor) for more sturdiness, less transparency and a longer lifespan, at a weight of 411 grams. If you’re a serious gram counter, go for the Lite version, and the Standard if you’re going to use the tent hard (and it’s still ridiculously light). For both versions, on ground with rocks or sharp objects we always recommend a piece of groundsheet such as Tyvek for extra protection.
With a peak height of 132 cm there’s enough room to sit up, get dressed and sort out your kit. The vestibule gives you space for your gear when it rains.
The Plex Solo comes with a medium Dyneema stuff sack, a piece of DCF repair tape and 2 spare zipper sliders. The tent pitches with a hiking pole or a separate tent pole, which is not included. Stakes and guy lines aren’t included either, since most gram counters have their own preferences there. A minimal setup needs 6 stakes, and up to 10 with extra guy lines. This is a single-wall tent, so there’s always a chance of condensation, just be aware of that.
