Durston X-Dome 2: ultralight, robust and livable

What immediately struck me while setting it up was the combination of space and stability. Despite its low weight, it doesn’t feel like a fragile tent at all. The vertical walls, the clever cross-bar, and the smart geometry give the X-Dome more headroom than you’d expect from a tent in this weight class. And yes, it’s truly freestanding — meaning you can pitch it without pegs (as long as conditions allow, just make sure you won’t have to chase it after a gust of wind). As you can imagine, that brings plenty of advantages.

The Durston X-Dome 2 pitches easily in different configurations: fly-first or inner-first. This is super convenient in the rain or when you just need to set up quickly for shelter. The small overhanging cross-bar above the door and an angled zipper provide a large entryway and prevent rain from dripping inside. The door fabric secures neatly with a small magnet, just like on the X-Mid (fidget alert!). The two vestibules are spacious enough for your wet gear and smelly shoes.

When it comes to materials, Durston impresses once again. The tent is made from 100% premium 15D silpoly, which doesn’t sag when wet, dries quickly, and stays taut. The Easton carbon poles offer excellent strength-to-weight performance. And small details — like magnetic door closures, four internal pockets, and a smart overall design — make this tent feel truly refined. If you plan to camp in more demanding conditions, you can even add two trekking poles to keep the flysheet extra taut in strong winds or snow.

X-Dome 2 options: mesh or solid inner, and pole length

The Durston X-Dome 2 comes in several configurations so you can tailor it perfectly to your adventures.
You can choose between a mesh inner or a solid inner.

• The mesh inner is ideal for typical three-season use and provides maximum ventilation and a light, airy sleeping space. It’s the lightest version and perfect for most bikepacking trips.
• The solid inner, on the other hand, has reduced mesh panels and offers better protection against wind and cold. This makes it more suitable for early spring, late autumn, or alpine trips where nights tend to be chillier and windier — or simply if you prefer a cozier tent.

You can also choose between two pole sets:

• Regular poleset: 46 cm (330 g) – most light and solid option.
• Short poleset: 33 cm (365 g) – reduces packed size to just 33 × 16 cm, perfect for compact bikepacking setups.

Both sets are made from lightweight yet strong Easton carbon and offer the same stability — the difference is mainly in packed size and headroom.
