Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt | 0°F / -17°C

This is the warmest quilt in the Revelation line, the 0°F / -17°C version. A generously filled down quilt for serious winter camping, and a good pick if you’re one of those people who is cold all the time and just wants to stay warm and toasty. The Revelation unzips completely flat so you can use it as a blanket, which makes it surprisingly usable in warmer weather too.

The EE Revelation has everything you need to sleep comfortably across a wide range of conditions. It’s a quilt, not a sleeping bag, so it’s designed to be used with a sleeping mat doing the insulating underneath you, between you and the ground. That means there’s no full-length zip and no built-in hood, which saves weight and space.

The temperature ratings on the EE quilts are limit temperatures. For the comfort temperature, add roughly 5 to 6 degrees. Don’t ask me why they stick to this convention, but plenty of manufacturers do the same. So a 0°F (-17°C) is really a quilt that keeps you warm down to about -11°C, and in a pinch you can take it to -17°C, but only with extra layers, otherwise you’ll genuinely get cold. If you’re winter camping with a quilt, remember you’ll need a really good sleeping mat, like a Thermarest Xtherm. A quilt has no real underside, so that’s where your insulation has to come from. The 10°F version ships with a draft collar as standard, which I think is a genuinely useful addition for quilts in that temperature range. Looking for a different model? Stuff sack: the EE quilts come with a plain stuff sack that fits the quilt well, but it isn’t a compression sack that crushes it down as small as possible. What I do is put a small strap around the stuff sack to compress the quilt a little, then roll my sleeping mat around it.
