The Durston X-Mid 1 Pro: I won’t say too much about this tent, because if you’ve made it here you probably already know a bit about it. If not, have a quick google and you’ll see the whole lightweight community is genuinely excited about this pro version of the X-Mid. It’s the tent that comes along on almost all my trips and has been my personal favourite ever since I bought the first “massdrop” version of the X-Mid. I have every version of Dan’s tents in my own collection and I love being able to offer them in the shop, ideal if you want one quickly and want to buy it within Europe. The X-Mid was designed for hikers who already carry trekking poles, so you’ll still need to add 2 separate tent poles, for example the Z-Flick tent poles (which are nicely compact and pack down easily).
The X-Mid Pro 1 is the ideal tent for the ultralight hiker who really wants to shave weight. It combines the clever X-Mid geometry with Dyneema composite fabric (DCF) into one of the roomiest, simplest and most storm-resistant one-person tents around, and still weighs under a pound, 485 grams with the silnylon floor. It’s an incredibly smart design and a genuinely nice tent to sit in. The vestibules are handy for stowing your dry bags and dirty shoes. There’s good headroom, and the finish is top quality. Every detail is thought through. The tent is pitched with 2 trekking or tent poles (not included).
A lot of room in a very small package (and it really is small: about 25 x 12 cm)
The X-Mid Pro 1 is a seriously roomy tent with more interior volume than any other 1-person tent. It’s not just roomy in the context of superlight tents, it’s roomier than almost any 1P tent at any weight.
The X-Mid Pro 1 manages this with its space-saving geometry that sets the two poles further apart to create 25-50% more interior volume than competing tents, including more usable length, headroom and shoulder room.
The floor length is a generous 222 cm, combined with steep end walls so that at 2.25 metres of length you’re still 38 cm off the ground. The result is the best usable length in its class (suitable for people up to 2 metres), while the floor width of over 80 cm easily fits the widest sleeping mats. You can sit upright along the whole length of the tent, and even two people can sit upright in it together.
On top of that there are two large vestibules on either side of the sleeping area, cleverly placed so you can easily fit large packs and other gear.
The X-Mid design came out of harsh conditions on real adventures, where you need a tent that works, and that elegant, capable simplicity carries through into the X-Mid Pro 1. Without the marketing speak, you can feel and see that the tent was designed by someone who is genuinely out there a lot and understands what does and doesn’t work.
The thoughtful design includes ultra-simple magnetic door toggles for one-handed operation, doorways that aren’t blocked by poles, large vestibules that place the sleeping area beside the doorway rather than blocking it, a taut floor (thanks to the elastics) that lies smooth and wrinkle-free, one-handed zips and double inner pockets.
