Additional details

The MSR Freelite 1 is one of the lightest, semi-detached tents that you can use perfectly for 3 seasons (and of course in Dutch winters). With a vestibule for your gear that you want dry but not in your tent (i.e. your smelly cycling shoes and that dirty saddle dry bag), space for a 25″ wide (e.g. 2x thermarest xlite long), this is the ideal tent for the adventurer who wants to travel super light. The old Freelite has had many bikepacking adventures and we were therefore even more enthusiastic when we were able to test the new version. Even though it is not a super spacious tent, it is perfectly manageable for a 1-person tent: 1 meter seat height, a rectangular bottom (and not tapered) of 2.2m x 0.84m. And a lot lighter than the previous version, almost 170 grams. The micromesh inner tent provides excellent ventilation and has a waterproof bathtub-like floor for protection against the elements. The zippers open easily and can even be operated with one hand. They also close at one point so that you always know where to open the zipper, even in the dark. What we find super useful are the storage bags with handy cable openings so you can easily charge your phone (or something else). A handy “top compartment” at the top of the tent is perfect for your headlamp and other small things like your glasses.

Let’s look at the rest: The MSR Freelite 1 is equipped with super strong DAC NFL tent poles. The flysheet is made from a DuraShield™ waterproof coating and taped seams keep the weather where it belongs – outside. The outer tent is separately assembled (so you can also set up the tent with the inner tent alone) and is designed in such a way that it saves a lot of weight (and provides wonderful “stargazing”). On one side there is a vestibule for storing your shoes and other luggage. Another nice feature: the entrances have StayDry™ rain gutters so that no water drips in.

For the bikepackers among us, the poles of the MSR Freelite 1 are approximately 45cm long and we prefer to store them under the top frame tube or on the horizontal tube with a pair of voile straps. You can of course also mount this nicely in a harness for your handlebars. You can set up the tent easily and quickly and pack it easily and compactly.
